I’M NOT THE BOSS. YET! — A BOOK FOR THE LEADERS IN THE MIDDLE

There is a point in many leadership careers when the responsibility arrives before the title does. You are expected to solve problems, support employees, protect the operation, make sound decisions, communicate upward, and deliver results—yet you may not control the budget, the policy, the staffing model, or the final decision.

That space between responsibility and authority is where I’m Not the Boss. Yet! was born.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

I’m Not the Boss. Yet! — How Mid-Level Managers Drive the Bottom Line in Casino Operations is a practical leadership book built from more than 25 years of experience in casino operations and Table Games. Although the examples come from an industry where decisions have to be made quickly and where service, compliance, labor, revenue, and people all collide in real time, the leadership principles extend far beyond the casino floor.

The book is for the supervisors, assistant managers, department managers, shift leaders, developing executives, and other professionals who are already carrying significant responsibility even when they do not yet hold the highest title in the room.

It explores how managers can read the business instead of simply reading a report; align labor with actual demand; recognize that coverage is not the same as capability; coach employees through difficult situations; communicate across departments; protect the guest or customer experience; use technology without surrendering judgment; and think with an owner mindset before someone officially gives them an executive title.

At its core, the book is about understanding the WHY behind the role, the HOW behind business performance, and the WHEN behind the next promotion.

WHY MID-LEVEL MANAGERS MATTER

Senior leaders create strategy, but mid-level managers are often the people responsible for turning that strategy into reality. They are the bridge between what the organization intends to happen and what actually happens on the floor, in the department, with the team, and with the customer.

They deal with the call-out that changes the entire staffing plan. They coach the employee who is struggling. They decide how to recover a guest experience. They determine whether a problem needs to be solved immediately or escalated. They explain executive decisions to frontline employees while also communicating operational realities back upward.

That work can be easy to overlook because much of it happens in the middle. I wanted this book to give that layer of leadership the attention it deserves.

COMING SOON — NOT YET PUBLISHED

I’m Not the Boss. Yet! is not yet published, but publication is coming soon. A preorder link will be added to The Manager Resource Vault website as soon as it becomes available. Until then, I will continue sharing lessons, conversations, and behind-the-scenes updates about the ideas that shaped the book.

LEADING FROM THE MIDDLE: TAKING THE CONVERSATION BEYOND THE BOOK

The book is only one part of this conversation. The Manager Resource Vault is also launching Leading From the Middle, a recorded leadership panel featuring working mid-level managers from different industries, along with leaders who have previously served in the middle and can speak to that experience.

The first discussion is tentatively planned for Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM

Central and will focus on the realities of accountability without full authority, staffing and capability, difficult conversations, operational problem-solving, communication, decision-making, and the pressure that mid-level managers often carry without it being visible to people above them.

Panelists will receive the discussion questions in advance, but the goal is not rehearsed corporate talking points. The goal is a practical conversation among people who actually live the work.

One of the questions I am especially interested in exploring is simple: What is one thing you wish senior leadership understood about what mid-level managers actually deal with every day?

That question captures much of what both the book and The Manager Resource Vault are trying to accomplish: make management more practical, make leadership conversations more useful, and give the people in the middle better tools and a stronger voice.

WHAT COMES NEXT

As publication gets closer, the preorder link for I’m Not the Boss. Yet! will be posted here on managerresourcevault.com. We will also introduce the Leading From the Middle panelists, share details about how the discussion can be watched, and release additional leadership content drawn from both the book and the panel conversation.

You may not have the title yet. Your decisions already matter.

You are already a boss. Now think and act like one.
